Argentinian Woman Winemaker Embraces Innovation
Susana Balbo of Mendoza, Argentina is known by many names.
Often called the “Queen of Torrontes” or the “Evita of Wine,” Susana is recognized throughout Argentina and the world for her incredible passion and success in winemaking. Susana has been making wine since she earned her enology degree in 1981, and she has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa, and Spain.
She is most known for her innovation and progressive spirit in developing wines with unique character and quality, and she is the first Argentinean enologist ever hired as a consultant by European wineries. In 1999, Susana designed and constructed the Dominio del Plata Winery with her husband Pedro Marchevsky in the famed Mendoza region of Argentina. Mendoza is 1 of the 23 provinces in Argentina, and it accounts for 70 percent of the nation’s wine production. In a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana stands out not only for her gender, but for her incredible skill and experience.
